About Union

You can't Spell Union without U and I

The history of Union Baptist Church is limited and fragmented. This limited information, gathered indicates this Church (Union Baptist) is an outgrowth of a Church organized about 1920, known as St. Elmore Baptist Church.

Some of its pioneer members were S.T. & Elizabeth Moore, C.L. & Laura Lewis. According to records, sometime after this Church was organized, members decided to change the name to Hopewell Baptist Church. This change was unanimously adopted by the Church. The Church was officially named Union Baptist Church in 1939 after Hopewell and Metropolitan Baptist Church congregations came together and named the Church, now known as Union Baptist Church.

Reverend O. T. Mitchell resigned as pastor in 1948. Reverends: F.W. Ray, Adams and Ross served as interim preachers until 1949, when Reverend H.P. Parrish was called as pastor. Under Pastor Parrish’s leadership, a new sanctuary was built as well as an educational facility and a church parsonage. Pastor Parrish was active in District, State and National work. He served as Western District Moderator. Also, he was Vice President of the State Congress of Christian Education Education. During Pastor Parrish’s years, many additions were made to the Church. He was a faithful servant of God and laid a strong foundation for Union Baptist Church. Pastor Parrish served until 1973 due to failing health. Monday following the first Sunday in February 1974, Union Baptist Church selected the late Reverend Charles W. Whitlow to serve as pastor. After much prayer and discussion with Church officers as to what would be expected, Reverend Whitlow accepted to serve as Pastor of Union Baptist Church. Pastor Whitlow was installed the first Sunday in May 1974, with his wife, Sister Jaunita Whitlow, by his side. The Late Dr. W.K. Jackson, then Pastor of the Saint John Missionary Baptist Church of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma preached the installation sermon. A few months later in August 1974, Pastor Whitlow and the Union Baptist Church Family formally expressed their appreciation and love to Pastor Parrish in a beautiful retirement service. The late Dr. T. Oscar Chappell, Sr., then Pastor of Morning Star Baptist Church of Tulsa, Oklahoma preached during the celebration of Pastor Parrish’s Christian Service. Pastor Whitlow served honorably and gracefully until 2021. Reverend Kristy Eady gracefully served as interim pastor in his place, until a replacement could be found. Following him in 2021 was Reverend Willie J Tiller Jr. (Dr.) who was accepted as Pastor.
